This He Did Without Remorse

by Melanie Garrett

From the moment Aida Genjać discovers that her mother was repeatedly raped in a detention centre outside Sarajevo she carries a terrible doubt in her heart.  What if she takes after her father more than her mother?

While listening to the news reports of Radovan Karadžić’s arrest, Aida realises her DNA could be the vital evidence needed to secure a war crimes’ conviction against her own father.  But as she tries to track him down, things quickly spiral out of control.

This He Did Without Remorse is a story of identity, belonging, and how confronting the past can set you free.

AIDA’S CULTURAL COMPASS

As Aida grapples to discover her true identity, she seeks out cultural heroes along the way, taking solace first in the astonishing work of Sarajevo artist Šejla Kamerić, before later receiving one of Enki Bilal’s extraordinary graphic novels as a gift.
Using these and other compatriots as her guide, Aida seeks to find her way into her labyrinthine heritage.
